David is a freelance composer and a music graduate of the University of Birmingham. His portfolio includes music for various instrumental and vocal ensembles, as well as electronic music. Whatever project you have in mind, David can compose the appropriate music, tailored to your individual needs.
I am a freelance composer and musician operating primarily in the South East of Scotland. As well as composing original music for concert performances, I am available to write soundtracks for films or other media projects. Whether you are looking for a simple electronic backing track, or a complex score recorded by live musicians, I can provide the music you need.
Having benefited from a classical training, and with experience in writing for a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles, ranging from solo saxophone to full-scale symphony orchestra, I specialise primarily in composing orchestral and chamber music. However, I am also increasingly involved in electro-acoustic projects, writing computer-based music for installations and media projects. I write in a variety of musical styles, including contemporary classical, popular, and jazz.
Born in 1990 in Inverness, Scotland, I moved with my family to rural Bavaria in Germany at the age of two, where I grew up near the city of Regensburg. I went to school at the Gymnasium in Parsberg, a provincial town around 20 miles from Regensburg. After completing my Abitur (the German equivalent of Highers), I enrolled on the Music course at the University of Birmingham, from which I graduated with a first class honours degree (BMus) in July 2012.
While in Birmingham, I studied composition under Michael Zev Gordon, Scott Wilson, and Daria Kwiatkowska. In May 2011 I won the composition competition of the university's Summer Festival of Music, and had my winning composition, Sonata for Chamber Orchestra, played in a performance by the Summer Festival Sinfonia on the 21st June. The final project for my undergraduate course, Behind Glass, was performed by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) early in May 2012, and was awarded the COMPASS Composition Prize by the university in association with BCMG.
As a violinist I have played in the Parsberg Chamber Orchestra and the Junge Symphonie Regensburg, as well as all three of the university orchestras in Birmingham and the CBSO Youth Orchestra. In addition, I have performed in a number of non-recurring events, such as the GMTG (Guild Musical Theatre Group) production of The Last Five Years at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I have a particular interest in chamber music, and perform regularly as a member of string quartets and other small ensembles. In June 2011 I took part in a performance of Mendelssohn's Octet in E-flat major.
In addition to my work as a freelance musician, I teach both composition and the violin, as well as music theory, on a one-to-one basis. If you are in need of tuition in any of these areas, please do get in touch, or visit my profile on thetutorpages.com.
